The M5 Ranch

The M5 Ranch is a working, hunting, and recreational ranch nestled deep in the heart of the Texas Hill Country.

The M5 boasts approximately 1,000 acres of some of the finest hunting land known to the Texas Hill Country, high fenced for game management and security.

Once a part of the historic Y. O. Ranch, we are located in western Kerr county, making us a quick drive from San Antonio or Austin. We are about 1.5 hours from San Antonio International Airport and about 2.5 hours from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport!

Due to our setting, the land on the ranch consists of gentle, rolling terrain and holds some breathtaking views! Native trees of this region include Live Oak trees, Ash Juniper, and the highly desirable Shin Oak. Grasses such as Sideoats grama, Indiangrass and Bluestem coat the hillsides, dotted with the occasional clump of Prickly Pear cactus. A myriad of Hill Country flowers, including the Texas Bluebonnet, can be found on the ranch at various points during the year. Minimal grazing has allowed this special habitat for our wildlife to flourish, creating picturesque scapes perfect for sightseeing or photography.

At Mattern Ranches, we pride ourselves on our responsible wildlife management practices. Some of Texas’ largest Whitetail deer and African hoof stock live on the ranch. Trophy whitetails and beautiful exotics can be frequently seen throughout the ranch. The wildlife on the ranch has been intensely managed and genetically enhanced to produce the quality of animals that we have present. Mattern Ranches provides year round supplemental feeding for our wildlife. These practices help to separate the quality of our wildlife from most other ranches in Texas. Native animals to the area that live on the ranch include White-tailed deer, Rio Grande turkey, Coyotes, Bobcats, White Wing and Mourning Dove, Various species of Duck, caracaras, Owl Species and other birds of prey. There are over 100 identified bird species that can be seen on the ranch! Exotic animals that have been brought onto the ranch include. Scimitar Oryx, Axis Deer, Black Buck Antelope, Red Deer, and Transcaspian Urials.

A wildlife rich, wet weather creek bed and two different ponds support our animals and serve as a draw for migrating birds year round. There is a beautiful pond right next to the house that is stocked with bass and bluegill that is sure to offer hours of excitement for anglers of all ages. There is also an outdoor fire pit perfectly situated to allow visitors to enjoy the cool Hill Country evenings.
